Safety procedures to observe in operating on patients with pacemakers

Check with pacemaker manufacturer as to their recommendations. Check all connections and cables on the monopolar active cable and patient plate cable. There must be no gaps where sparking could occur in the system. Monitor the patient throughout surgery. Use bipolar techniques wherever possible. Never place patient plate so that returning current passes through the area of the heart. Have a defibrillator ready at all times.
